The South African Council for the Architectural Profession Presents Inaugural Education Conference

The South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) will host its inaugural Education Conference on 10–11 September 2026 at the Beattie Building, University of Cape Town (UCT). This flagship event will bring together academics, students, candidates, professionals, infrastructure departments, policymakers, and built environment stakeholders to engage on the future of architectural education and practice and its role in shaping a safe, ethical, and sustainable built environment.

The conference comes at a critical time for South Africa’s construction and built environment sector. Recent building collapses across the country have highlighted the urgent need to strengthen building control capacity at the local authority level, strengthen professional competence standards to ensure buildings are not only aesthetically pleasing and functional, but also respond to environmental responsibility requirements, energy efficiency, resilience, and sustainable use of resources.  Reinforce regulatory compliance and ensure that graduates and candidates entering the profession are equipped with the competencies required to safeguard public safety through sustainable architectural practices.

As a result, the SACAP Education Conference aims to interrogate the alignment between architectural education and built environment demands. The programme will focus on alignment between academic teaching, practice, professional regulation, and industry needs.

The conference will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions, and workshops led by local and international experts. It will also provide a platform for academic institutions to share best practices and innovations in architectural training.

SACAP calls on all stakeholders in the built environment sector to participate in this important dialogue and to collectively work towards restoring public confidence in the profession.
