Designing for the Human Brain: A Neuroarchitecture
Talk Series |
|
Description |
A collaboration between GIfA and CIfA How does architecture shape the way we think, feel,
and behave? Join us for an insightful and forward-thinking talk
series, “Neuroarchitecture: Designing for the Human Brain” presented by
Architect Francois Nortje (Director, Osmond Lange Architects & Planners)
This series explores the powerful intersection
between neuroscience and the built environment, unpacking how design
decisions influence human emotion, cognition, productivity, and wellbeing. As architects and designers, we don’t just shape
spaces, we shape experiences. This talk challenges conventional design
thinking and introduces evidence-based approaches that place human experience
at the centre of the design process. Why You Should Attend Whether you’re a student, emerging professional, or
experienced practitioner, this series will expand your design thinking and
equip you with tools to create more human-centred, impactful environments.
Special Announcement We have something exciting for you! This series is just the beginning, more talks and
episodes are on the way. Stay engaged as we continue to bring you insightful
sessions designed to deliver a rich and evolving experience throughout the
program. |

SANS 10400 XA 2nd Edition (2021) Fenestration
Workshop |
|
Description |
This fully updated course will be presented by Peter
Wyness, who has presented SANS 10400-XA courses since 2011. The event will
include Excel templates for fenestration calculations, plus all the other
parts of the Standard, which will be for office use as well as for use during
the presentation. This event is open to all, but is primarily intended
for delegates who have not previously attended a course by Mr Wyness, or who
have been unsuccessful in completing the exercises required. Completing the course will reward the delegate with a
Certificate of Competency. THE NEW STANDARDS NOW APPLY YOUR PREVIOUS CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE WILL NO LONGER SUFFICE REGULATIONS HAVE CHANGED GIfA would like to invite you to attend a workshop on SANS 10400 – XA 2ND Edition (2021) 24 April 2026 Presented By Peter Wyness SANS 10400-XA
(2021) became law in November 2021. This is a revision that, at first sight, seems to
offer a very much easier route to compliance than the 2011 edition. But on
closer examination, it is a lot more complicated than it looks! The course will give a full explanation of the
various elements of the Standard and will provide the SABS tables required to
complete the exercises. The presentation will include comprehensive Excel
templates which will lead the architectural professionals through the
complicated fenestration specification procedure. This is a full-day educational course on this
Standard, presented as a one-day 1.0 CPD in Category 1, an accredited event. It will therefore not be necessary for the delegate
to buy SANS 10400- XA before attending the course, but it is beneficial
to have it handy. Registered professionals can download the regulations
via the SACAP website via your profile Important: Course material will be forwarded to delegates 2-3
days before the event. Make sure that you have everything listed in place and ready for you to use
on the day! Links will be forwarded to delegates 1-2 DAYS before
the event. A deemed to be competent certificate will be issued
to all who have completed the course and passed the test. Unlike face-to-face lectures, this online event
requires a fair amount of preparation. Without the preparation, you will not be able to
complete the course, so please read the course material carefully, and make
sure that you have everything listed in place and ready for you to use
on the day! Course material will be forwarded to delegates 2-3 days
before the event. If you are not able to have available a second computer, a
split-screen ability, or second monitor, one that can do Excel, or are not happy doing Excel calculations. Please note
that there is course material enabling you to use your calculator. Cost: GIfA members: R1250.00 Non-members: R1750.00 Venue: Zoom Online Time: 8:30-16:00hrs |

GSA Talk:
Andy Barnes: Grimshaw - Learning from Nature: The Architecture of Eden
Project
|
|
Description |
GSA Talk: Andy Barnes: Grimshaw - Learning from
Nature: The Architecture of Eden Project
Date: Thursday, 23 April 2026 Time: 18:00 – 20:00 Venue: On MS Teams SAST RSVP: See Linktree Cat 1, 0, 2 CPD credits
Andy is an architect and principal at Grimshaw where
he leads transport, cultural, and master planning projects in the UK and
internationally. He is accredited by the International Living Future
Institute (ILFI) reflecting Andy’s passion for creating buildings and places
that balance the built environment with natural ecosystems and advocating for
regenerative design at all scales.
Andy’s approach to design, which draws on the beauty
and efficiency of nature to deliver transformational change, is exemplified
in his long-term collaboration with Eden Project @edenprojectcornwall which
includes new destinations in Morecambe and Qingdao, and his recent
award-winning work at Shenzhen Airport East International Transport Hub in
China.
Using advanced digital tools and computational
workflows, Andy’s work also focuses on optimising the design process and
building performance. In 2025 he shared this approach at the Shape to
Fabrication AEC conference presenting Digital strategies for large-scale
infrastructure design. Andy also leads Grimshaw’s industry partnership with
the University of Lancaster exploring how designers can make better use of AI
to support low carbon building design.
As the first guest speaker for RIBA Africa @riba
Andy will share insights into the @grimshawarch and Eden Project
collaboration - as Eden Project Cornwall celebrates its 25th birthday -
exploring the integration of architecture, the natural world and people-led
experiences and education that is realising a more regenerative future.
